Watch Winders

Do I really need a watch winder?

Only if you rotate between multiple automatic watches. A winder keeps your watch wound and ready to wear, so you don't have to reset the time and date each morning. If you wear the same watch every day, your wrist does the job — a winder is for collectors with a rotation. Browse our watch winder collection to find the right capacity for your collection.

How many TPD (turns per day) does my watch need?

Most automatic watches need between 650 and 800 turns per day (TPD). Rolex, Omega and the majority of Swiss movements sit comfortably in this range. Always check your manufacturer's specification — setting TPD too high won't damage the watch (the mainspring slips when fully wound) but it wastes energy and adds wear. See our TPD settings guide for brand-specific recommendations.

Will a watch winder damage my automatic watch?

No — a quality winder set to the correct TPD will not damage your watch. Automatic movements are designed to be kept wound; the rotor simply stops adding power once the mainspring is full. Problems only arise from cheap winders with jerky motors or incorrect settings. Aevitas winders use premium Japanese and German motors with programmable TPD for safe, consistent winding.

Which direction should my watch winder rotate?

Bidirectional (alternating clockwise and anti-clockwise) is the safest default and suits the vast majority of automatic watches. Some movements wind in one direction only — for example, many older Rolex calibres wind clockwise. If in doubt, choose bidirectional; it covers both directions and works for virtually every modern automatic. All Aevitas winders offer clockwise, anti-clockwise and bidirectional modes.

Are Aevitas watch winders noisy? Can I keep one in the bedroom?

Aevitas winders use premium Japanese and German motors, widely regarded as the quietest in the industry — most produce under 10 decibels, quieter than a whisper. They're designed for bedroom use and won't disturb sleep. If you're particularly sensitive to sound, our premium winder range features additional sound-dampening.

Watch Boxes

What size watch box do I need?

Count your watches first, then add 2–4 extra slots for future purchases — collectors almost always grow. Check the compartment dimensions against your largest watch (measure lug-to-lug including the crown). Aevitas boxes have generously sized compartments that fit even oversized 44mm+ cases. Browse by capacity in our watch box collection.

Leather vs wood watch box — which is better?

Neither is objectively better — it depends on where the box lives. Leather boxes (genuine or vegan) are elegant, lightweight and suit bedside tables. Wooden boxes, particularly walnut veneer, are heavier, more formal and make a statement on a dresser. Both protect equally well; choose based on your interior. Aevitas offers both in our watch box range.

How do I clean and maintain a leather watch box?

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth followed by a quality leather conditioner every 6–12 months to prevent drying and cracking. Keep the box away from direct sunlight and radiators, which fade and dry leather. Never use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on the lining.

Will my watches get scratched inside a watch box?

Not in a quality box. Aevitas watch boxes use soft-touch velvet or plush linings specifically chosen to prevent scratching, with individual padded compartments that stop watches knocking together. The main scratch risk comes from overcrowded boxes or placing watches on hard surfaces — both of which a proper box eliminates.

What's the difference between a watch box and a watch winder?

A watch box is static storage — it protects and organises your watches but doesn't keep them running. A watch winder rotates your automatic watches to keep them wound and ready to wear. Many collectors use both: winders for their rotation pieces, boxes for quartz watches and overflow. Some Aevitas products combine both, such as our winder safes.

Watch Rolls & Travel

How do I protect my watch when travelling?

Use a dedicated watch roll or travel case — never toss a watch loose into luggage. A quality roll has individual padded compartments that cradle each watch and prevent them knocking together or against hard objects. For a single watch, a travel pouch or watch pod offers compact protection. See our watch roll collection.

Leather vs fabric watch roll — which should I choose?

Leather rolls look premium, age beautifully and offer good structure, but need occasional conditioning. Fabric or canvas rolls are lighter, often water-resistant and more casual — ideal for adventure travel. For business trips and luxury watches, leather is the classic choice. Aevitas offers both genuine leather and premium vegan leather rolls.

How many watches fit in a watch roll?

Most watch rolls hold 2–3 watches, which covers the majority of trips. Larger rolls accommodate 4–6 for extended travel or serious collectors. Don't overstuff — each watch needs its own padded compartment to prevent scratching. If you regularly travel with more than 3 watches, consider a dedicated travel watch case instead of a roll.

Can I take expensive watches through airport security?

Yes. Keep watches in your hand luggage — never in checked baggage. At security, place your watch roll in the tray like any other item; X-ray scanners won't harm mechanical or quartz watches. For very high-value pieces, consider wearing your most expensive watch and packing the rest. Some travellers prefer a discreet, non-branded roll to avoid drawing attention.

How do I clean a leather watch roll?

Wipe down with a soft, slightly damp cloth after trips to remove dust and oils. Apply leather conditioner every 6–12 months to keep the leather supple, especially if the roll is exposed to sun or dry cabin air. Allow to air dry naturally if it gets wet — never use direct heat. Store unrolled in a cool, dry place between trips.

How do I set the TPD on my Aevitas winder?

Most Aevitas winders have an LCD or dial control — select your desired TPD (650–800 covers most watches) and rotation direction, then press start. The winder runs in cycles with rest periods to mimic natural wrist movement. Refer to your model's manual for exact button sequences, or check our TPD settings guide for recommended settings by brand.
