Turns Per Day (TPD)

Turns per day (TPD) is the number of full rotations a watch winder completes in 24 hours, and it is the standard measure of how much winding an automatic watch receives. Every automatic movement is designed to need a certain amount of rotation to keep its mainspring at working tension, and that requirement — expressed in TPD — varies by movement, not by taste.

Where the number comes from

An automatic watch winds itself through a rotor that swings as the wrist moves. How efficiently that rotor converts movement into mainspring tension depends on the movement's gearing, its winding direction, and how much tension the mainspring needs to run the watch for a full day. Manufacturers work this back to a daily rotation figure. Set a winder to that figure and the watch should hold a steady state of wind indefinitely: never fully wound, never running down.

Most modern automatic movements fall somewhere between roughly 600 and 1,000 TPD, with outliers in both directions. Rolex calibres, for example, typically require 650 TPD in both directions. Many Omega movements sit between 650 and 800 TPD. The spread matters: set 650 for a movement that needs 950 and the watch will slowly lose ground and eventually stop; set far more than a movement needs and — as our slipping bridle entry explains — the excess is simply shed by the mechanism designed to shed it.

TPD is about maintenance, not charging

A common misunderstanding is that a winder's job is to charge a dead watch back to full. It can do that over time, but its real purpose is maintenance: replacing the winding your wrist would have provided. A fully stopped watch is usually better served by a gentle hand-wind (where the movement allows it) and a day on the wrist, with the winder taking over from there. Relatedly, TPD is always counted across a full day-night cycle that includes rest periods — a winder delivering 800 turns does so in intermittent bursts, not in one continuous spin, because that is how a wrist behaves.

What it means for your winder

TPD is the first setting to get right, and it is per-watch, not per-winder. If you own watches from several brands, a winder with independent settings per rotor lets each watch sit at its own figure; a single shared setting forces a compromise that suits nobody. Frequently asked questions

Can too many turns per day damage my watch?

No. Modern automatic movements use a slipping bridle that lets the mainspring slip inside its barrel once full tension is reached, so surplus turns are shed rather than stored. A wrong TPD setting will not damage a modern automatic — the practical risks are a watch that stops (too few turns) or needless mechanical cycling (far too many).

Is TPD the same for every watch from one brand?

No. TPD is set by the movement, and a single brand may use several movements with different requirements. Two watches from the same maker can legitimately need different settings, which is why lookups are by model and calibre, not by logo.

What TPD should I use if I cannot find my watch listed?

Start around 650–750 TPD set to bidirectional winding, which covers a large share of modern movements, then watch the watch: if it keeps time over a week on the winder, the setting is sufficient. If it loses or stops, step up by 100.
