Breitling: Instruments for Professionals

LΓ©on Breitling founded his workshop in Saint-Imier in 1884 with a single focus: chronographs. Not dress watches that happened to time things β€” instruments built for measurement. In 1915 Breitling created the first wrist chronograph with an independent pusher. In 1923 came separate start/stop and reset pushers. In 1934, the second independent reset pusher β€” the three-pusher layout every chronograph uses today. When aviation needed wrist instruments, Breitling answered: the 1942 Chronomat with its slide-rule bezel for pilots' calculations, and in 1952 the Navitimer, whose circular slide rule could compute fuel consumption, climb rates, and conversions on the wrist. The Navitimer became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, its dial a working flight computer.

1969 brought the Calibre 11 β€” developed jointly with Heuer and Hamilton-Buren, one of the first automatic chronograph movements in history. The quartz crisis devastated the company until pilot and entrepreneur Ernest Schneider acquired it in 1979, rebuilding around the aviation identity. The modern era's crown jewel is the Calibre B01, launched in 2009: Breitling's first fully in-house chronograph, column wheel, vertical clutch, 70-hour reserve β€” developed over five years and now the foundation of the range. Every Breitling with a chronometer designation is COSC-certified, and the brand's "Breitling Chronometrie" facility subjects movements to additional in-house testing.

Collectors choose Breitling for authenticity no marketing department could invent: 140 years of building timing instruments for people whose lives depend on precision. A Navitimer is not styled like a pilot's watch; it is a pilot's watch, slide rule and all.

Breitling Movements: The B-Calibre Range

Manufacture Calibre B01. The in-house flagship: column wheel, vertical clutch, 47 jewels, 70-hour power reserve, COSC-certified. Developed entirely in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Powers the Navitimer B01, Chronomat B01, Avenger B01, and Superocean Heritage Chronograph. One of the finest serial-production chronograph movements in Switzerland.

Calibre B17. The ETA 2824-2 base: 25 jewels, 38-hour reserve, COSC-certified by Breitling. Found in the Superocean Automatic 44/46, Avenger Automatic 45, and Colt. The 38-hour reserve is the range's shortest β€” a B17 left Friday evening stops Sunday.

Calibre B20. The Tudor MT5612 base, from the Kenissi partnership: 28 jewels, 70-hour reserve. Powers the Superocean Heritage II and selected Avenger models. An excellent movement wearing Breitling finishing.

Calibre B35. The ETA 2892-A2 base with GMT module: 28 jewels, 42-hour reserve. Found in the Chronomat GMT and Avenger GMT.

Correct TPD: 800 turns per day, bidirectional, as the house standard. The B01's chronograph train and the B17's 38-hour reserve both reward the full 800. The B20 (Tudor architecture) is comfortable at 650–800; standardising on 800 across a Breitling collection is correct and simplifies multi-watch programming. Aevitas winders include 800 bidirectional as a core programme.

Model-by-Model Guidance

Navitimer B01 Chronograph 43 (ref. AB0138211G1P1)

Calibre B01, 70-hour reserve, 43mm with the iconic slide-rule bezel. The Navitimer is Breitling's soul: beaded bezel, tri-compax dial. At 800 TPD bidirectional the B01's column-wheel chronograph stays at full wind. The 43mm case with 13.6mm depth needs a winder with genuine interior clearance.

Superocean Automatic 44 (ref. A17376211L2S1)

Calibre B17, 38-hour reserve, 44mm. The Superocean is Breitling's dive instrument: 1,000m water resistance on the 46mm, ceramic bezel, oversized hands. The 38-hour reserve makes this the collection's most winder-dependent watch β€” it cannot survive a weekend unworn. 800 bidirectional is essential, not optional. The 44mm case is large; confirm cushion and interior dimensions.

Chronomat B01 42 (ref. AB0134101G1P1)

Calibre B01, 70-hour reserve, 42mm with the distinctive onion crown and rider-tab bezel. The Chronomat was relaunched in 2020 as Breitling's universal sports chronograph. The B01 inside is identical in architecture to the Navitimer's β€” 800 bidirectional serves it perfectly. The metal Rouleaux bracelet drapes beautifully on a properly tensioned cushion.

Avenger B01 Chronograph 44 (ref. AB0182111B1S1)

Calibre B01, 70-hour reserve, 44mm titanium option available. The Avenger is Breitling's most overtly military design. Titanium cases are light β€” ensure the cushion grips positively. The grip-pattern bezel and stencil dial numerals mark it as an instrument; keep it running as one.

What to Look for in a Breitling Watch Winder

800 TPD bidirectional as the house setting. From the B01 Navitimer to the B17 Superocean, 800 covers the Breitling range. Uniform programming across a multi-watch winder keeps setup simple.

Slide-rule bezel awareness. The Navitimer's bidirectional bezel rotates freely β€” this is normal and unaffected by winding. But the watch should be mounted with the bezel's 12 o'clock marker aligned; a winder that jolts on start-up can rotate a loose bezel. Aevitas's smooth-start Japanese and German motors avoid this entirely.

Large-case capacity. Breitling does not do small: 43–46mm is the norm, 48mm exists. Measure your largest watch and verify against the winder's interior specifications before purchasing.

Aviation-grade presentation. Breitling's design language is technical and bold. Brushed steel, carbon fibre, and dark finishes complement the brand; fussy traditional styling clashes with it.

Single vs Multi-Watch for the Breitling Collector

The classic Breitling duo β€” Navitimer B01 for the office, Superocean for weekends β€” suits a double winder with both positions at 800 bidirectional. Note the Superocean's 38-hour B17 reserve versus the Navitimer's 70-hour B01: the winder equalises them, and both are ready every morning. The full aviation collection (Navitimer, Chronomat, Avenger, Superocean Heritage) maps to a 4 or 6-watch winder β€” uniform 800 programming, silent operation, and the satisfaction of a complete instrument panel, wound and ready.

The Aevitas Recommendation for Breitling Owners

Set 800 TPD bidirectional β€” Breitling's house standard from the B01 to the B17 β€” on an Aevitas single, double, or multi-watch winder. The carbon fibre finish option is the natural visual partner for Breitling's instrument aesthetic, and the silent Japanese motors respect the chronometer within. For the Navitimer devotee, the single touch-screen winder is the perfect bedside companion; for the full squadron, the 6-watch winder keeps every calibre at full wind. Every Aevitas winder carries a 3-year warranty with free UK delivery β€” precision instruments, cared for precisely.

Breitling Watch Winder FAQs

What TPD setting does a Breitling need?

Breitling’s B01, B20, and ETA-based calibres typically need 650–800 TPD bi-directional. Our TPD database covers 12 Breitling models including Navitimer, Superocean, Chronomat, and Avenger.

What is the best watch winder for a Navitimer?

The Navitimer B01 needs 800 TPD bi-directional β€” available on all Aevitas winders. For chronograph models, ensure the winder’s TPD matches your calibre; our database lists exact settings per reference.

Do Breitling chronographs need different settings?

The base movement determines TPD, not the chronograph complication β€” so a Navitimer B01 and a Superocean Heritage B20 may need different settings. Check our TPD database for your exact model, then program each rotor individually on multi-watch winders.

Will a winder keep my Breitling’s chronograph accurate?

A winder keeps the base movement running, which keeps time accurate. The chronograph itself only runs when activated β€” the winder ensures the watch is always ready to time with a full power reserve.

What warranty covers Breitling winders?

All Aevitas winders carry a 3-year warranty standard (5 years on newer models), with premium Japanese and German motors, free UK delivery, and 30-day returns.
