Omega: From the Moon to the Master Chronometer

Omega's story begins in 1848, when Louis Brandt opened a workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In 1894 the company produced a 19-ligne calibre so precise, so easy to regulate and repair, that it was christened "Omega" β€” the final letter of the Greek alphabet, signifying ultimate achievement β€” and the company took the name. Omega became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in 1932, a role it still holds. But two watches define the brand's legend: the Speedmaster, worn on the Moon in 1969 during Apollo 11, and the Seamaster, born in 1948 and now the world's benchmark dive watch.

The modern era of Omega watchmaking is defined by two technical revolutions. The first was the Co-Axial escapement, invented by the English watchmaker George Daniels and industrialised by Omega from 1999 β€” the first genuinely new escapement in 250 years, reducing sliding friction and extending service intervals. The second was the Master Chronometer certification, launched with METAS in 2015: every Master Chronometer movement is tested cased, exposed to 15,000 gauss magnetic fields, and certified to 0/+5 seconds per day β€” roughly twice as strict as COSC alone. The silicon Si14 hairspring, antimagnetic to 15,000 gauss, underpins the whole architecture.

Collectors choose Omega for a distinctive combination: genuine horological history, cutting-edge materials science, and prices that undercut Rolex while matching its technical specification. An Omega is a watchmaker's watch, and it repays knowledgeable care.

Omega Movements: The Co-Axial Family

Calibre 8800 / 8801. The entry Master Chronometer: 35 jewels, 25,200 vph, 55-hour power reserve, silicon Si14 hairspring, Nivachoc shock protection. Found in the Seamaster Diver 300M and Railmaster. Automatic winding in both directions.

Calibre 8900 / 8901. The full-size Master Chronometer with time-zone function: 39 jewels, 60-hour reserve, jumping hour hand for travellers. Powers the Aqua Terra, Planet Ocean 600M, and Globemaster. The 8901 adds Sedna gold rotors and bridges for precious-metal models.

Calibre 8500 / 8501. The original in-house Co-Axial (2007): 39 jewels, 60-hour reserve, two barrels in series. Still found across the range and the foundation the 8800/8900 refined.

Calibre 9300 / 9900 / 9901. The Co-Axial column-wheel chronographs: 54–60 jewels, 60-hour reserve, Si14 silicon balance spring, vertical clutch. Powers the Speedmaster '57, Speedmaster Racing, and Planet Ocean Chronograph.

Calibre 3861. The Moonwatch's manual-wind chronograph β€” and an important exception: manual-wind watches must never go on a winder. If your Speedmaster Professional is a 3861/1861 Moonwatch, wind it by hand; the winder guidance below applies to Omega's automatic references.

Correct TPD settings: the documented baseline for Co-Axial calibres 8500, 8800, and 8900 is 650 turns per day, bidirectional. These are highly efficient movements β€” 650 TPD maintains full reserve with minimal mechanical effort. The chronograph calibres 9300/9900, with their additional gear train load, prefer 700 TPD bidirectional. Older Omega automatics on the Calibre 2500 (ETA 2892 base) are comfortable anywhere from 650 to 800. Aevitas winders cover the full 650–800 bidirectional range, so every Omega calibre is catered for.

Model-by-Model Guidance

Seamaster Diver 300M (ref. 210.30.42.20.03.001)

Calibre 8800, 55-hour reserve, 42mm. The world's best-selling dive watch and a Master Chronometer to 15,000 gauss. At 650 TPD bidirectional the 8800 stays at full wind and the watch is always ready for the wrist.

Seamaster Aqua Terra (ref. 220.10.41.21.03.004)

Calibre 8900, 60-hour reserve, teak-pattern dial. The Aqua Terra's jumping hour hand makes it a traveller's watch β€” and a stopped traveller's watch means re-setting two time zones. A winder at 650 bidirectional eliminates that chore entirely.

Speedmaster '57 / Racing (Co-Axial automatics)

Calibre 9900, 60-hour reserve, column-wheel chronograph. Unlike the manual Moonwatch, these automatic Speedmasters thrive on a winder β€” set 700 TPD bidirectional. Note: if your Speedmaster is the manual-wind Professional (3861/1861), hand-wind only β€” it must never go on a winder.

Constellation Globemaster (ref. 130.33.41.21.03.001)

Calibre 8900/8901, the world's first Master Chronometer. The pie-pan dial and fluted bezel mark it as Omega's dress flagship. At 650 TPD bidirectional the movement stays wound.

What to Look for in an Omega Watch Winder

650 TPD bidirectional as standard, 700 available for chronographs. Omega's range spans both settings, so a single fixed-speed winder is a compromise. Aevitas programmable winders let you assign 650 to the Seamaster and 700 to the Speedmaster chrono on adjacent rotors.

Respect for the Master Chronometer standard. A movement certified to 0/+5 seconds per day deserves a winder with smooth, consistent rotation β€” not the jerky start-stop of cheap motors. Aevitas's premium Japanese and German motors deliver the steady motion a precision movement expects.

Bracelet and strap versatility. Omega owners swap between bracelet, NATO, and rubber with enthusiasm. The winder cushion must grip securely regardless of strap type β€” particularly NATO straps, which add bulk under the watch head.

Chronograph clearance. The Speedmaster '57 and Planet Ocean Chronograph are 16mm+ thick. Verify the winder's interior depth before buying; Aevitas winders are dimensioned for modern sports chronographs.

Single vs Multi-Watch for the Omega Collector

The classic Omega pairing β€” a Seamaster Diver for weekends and an Aqua Terra for the office β€” is served by a 2-watch winder with both rotors at 650 bidirectional. Add an automatic Speedmaster and choose a 4-watch winder with one rotor at 700. Serious collectors with five or more automatics should look at 6 or 8-watch winders.

The Aevitas Recommendation for Omega Owners

Start with the correct programme: 650 TPD bidirectional for your Co-Axial Seamaster, Aqua Terra, or Constellation; 700 for the chronograph Speedmasters. The Aevitas single watch winder with touch-screen control makes this a thirty-second setup. For the growing collection, Aevitas 4 and 6-watch winders offer independently programmable rotors β€” 650 here, 700 there β€” with silent Japanese and German motors that won't disturb the Master Chronometer's rest. And remember: the manual-wind Moonwatch stays out of the winder and in your hands, wound with the crown, as it has been since 1969. Every Aevitas winder carries a 3-year warranty with free UK delivery.

Omega Watch Winder FAQs

What TPD setting does an Omega need?

Most Omega Co-Axial movements run best at 650 TPD bi-directional as a baseline, with some models preferring 800. Our TPD database covers 11 Omega models including Seamaster, Speedmaster, and Railmaster β€” note the Moonwatch is manual-wind and needs no winder.

What is the best watch winder for an Omega Seamaster?

The Seamaster’s Co-Axial calibre needs 650–800 TPD bi-directional, which every Aevitas winder provides. Choose by collection size: single winder for one Seamaster, or a 4, 6, or 8-watch model if you own multiple Omegas.

Does my Speedmaster need a winder?

The classic Moonwatch (calibre 1861/3861) is manual-wind and does not need a winder. However, automatic Speedmaster models like the Speedmaster Reduced or Racing Co-Axial do benefit β€” check your specific reference in our TPD guide.

Can one winder handle both my Omega and other brands?

Yes β€” Aevitas multi-watch winders have individually programmable rotors, so your Omega can run at 650 bi-directional while a Rolex runs at 800 on the adjacent rotor. Each watch gets exactly the setting it needs.

What warranty covers Omega winders?

All Aevitas winders include a 3-year warranty (5 years on many newer models), premium Japanese and German motors, free UK delivery, and 30-day returns.
