Programmable Winder

A programmable winder is a watch winder whose programme — turns per day and rotation direction — can be set by the user, rotor by rotor, rather than fixed by the factory. It is the feature that separates a winder bought for one specific watch from a winder bought for a collection: each drum runs the programme its own watch actually requires.

What programming actually controls

Two variables, both per movement. Turns per day sets how much winding the watch receives across a full day's cycle, typically in steps (650, 750, 850 and beyond) with rest periods built between rotation bursts — a proper programme mimics the rhythm of wear rather than spinning continuously. Direction sets clockwise, counter-clockwise, or bidirectional, matching how the movement's gearing accepts energy. On a programmable winder each rotor carries its own pair of settings, because the two watches side by side may share nothing: in our audited data nearly four in ten automatic watches wind in one direction only, and required turns range from under 500 to over 1,300 across brands.

The alternative shapes are worth naming. Fixed-programme winders run one compromise programme for every watch — adequate for a single bidirectional watch near the common 650 TPD, wrong in one variable or the other for much else. App- and touchscreen-controlled winders, found at the top of our range, are programmable winders with a better interface: the function is identical, the setting is simply done on a screen rather than with switches behind the drum.

What it means for your winder

Buy programming if any of these are true: you own or will own more than one automatic; any of your watches winds in one direction only; or your watches' required turns differ widely. Look each model up in our TPD database, set each rotor once, and the winder stops being a compromise you manage and becomes furniture that works. If you own exactly one watch, it winds both ways, and it sits near 650 TPD, a simpler winder serves you honestly as well — programming is a collection feature, and we would rather sell you the right tier than the higher one.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a programmable winder for a Rolex?

Rolex is the easy case: every model in our Winding Index data takes 650 TPD bidirectional, so almost any winder is set correctly out of the box. Programming earns its keep with mixed collections and one-direction movements.

What happens if two watches share one programme?

One of them is probably under- or over-served: usually the one-direction watch on a bidirectional programme still winds (it engages on its winding swing), but a clockwise-only watch on a counter-clockwise programme receives nothing and stops.

How often do programmes need changing?

Only when the watch on that rotor changes. Settings are per movement, not per season — set them at the database, and they stay correct for as long as that watch lives there.
