Winder Motor
A winder motor is the small electric motor that turns a watch winder's drum — one per rotor on any winder worth owning. It is the component that decides how quiet the winder is at 3 a.m., how evenly it turns, and whether the winder is still working in ten years. When two winders look alike and one costs twice the other, the motor is usually the honest reason.
Where winder motors come from
The watch winder industry runs overwhelmingly on two motor traditions. Japanese motors — the industry's workhorse, built by specialist makers to tight tolerances — are prized for quietness and consistency, and drive the majority of quality winders worldwide. Premium German motors occupy the other end: engineered for very long service life and near-silent running, at a correspondingly higher cost. Our own winders use premium Japanese and German motors across the range, chosen per model. What we would steer you away from is not a country but a category: the unbranded motors in very cheap winders, whose noise, uneven torque and short life are the real content of most "winders are bad" stories.
Motor quality shows up in three places. Noise: a good motor under load is effectively silent in a bedroom; a poor one whirs, clicks or hunts. Evenness: rotation should be smooth and continuous at a steady rate — juddering stresses nothing mechanically serious, but it tells you about the gearing's tolerances. Longevity: a winder motor runs in bursts for hours a day, for years; quality motors are rated for that duty, cheap ones are repurposed from toys and novelties and are not. Motors are also the most common failure we see on our own repair bench — usually at eight or more years old, in winders that have earned a repair rather than a replacement.
What it means for your winder
You are, in a real sense, buying the motor and getting a cabinet around it. Before choosing, check that the product page names the motor's origin, that each rotor has its own motor (shared motors force shared settings — see programmable winders), and that the maker repairs what it sells: our repair service exists because a good motor at the end of its life is a part to replace, not a winder to bin. A winder with a named motor and a repair path behind it will almost always outlast the alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Can a winder motor magnetise my watch?
Quality motors are shielded and positioned so their field does not reach the watch — see magnetism. Magnetised watches trace overwhelmingly to speakers, tablet covers and bag clasps, not to winders with proper shielding.
How long should a winder motor last?
A quality Japanese or German motor should give many years of daily service; the repairs we book are typically on winders eight years old or more. When a motor does fail, a repair from £89.95 usually beats replacing the whole winder.
Why is my winder noisy?
Age, usually: worn gears or a tiring motor. Try it unloaded first — a loose-fitting watch rattling on its cushion mimics motor noise (see cushion fit). Noise from the mechanism itself is a repair-bench question.
